Storytelling Festival – The Garner Storytelling Festival is a GEF community collaboration project focused on reading. It is organized by the media specialists from the eleven schools, in collaboration with the Wake County Public Libraries. Professional storytellers and poets visit the middle schools during a week in the late winter or early spring each year and culminates in the half-day Garner Storytelling Festival. The Festival, open to the community, features these nationally known and local professionals as well as student storytellers and poets from the Garner-area schools. They demonstrate their oral speaking skills and sharing poetry they have written. The Festival is preceded by a morning workshop for educators on using storytelling and poetry writing to improve reading. GEF arranges for the workshop attendees to receive continuing education credits.
Baccalaureate - The Garner Educational Foundation, in cooperation with the administration of Garner Magnet High School (GMHS) and local faith organizations, sponsors and coordinates the annual Baccalaureate Service for GMHS graduates. For the last several years, the service has been held at the Aversboro Road Baptist Church in May. GEF arranges for a speaker and works with the school administration to advertise the event and distribute event passes. Local churches assist with the cost for the event.
SCOR – SCOR (Schools & Community Organized to Read) is a locally-developed reading buddy program for the eight GEF-supported elementary schools. SCOR serves primarily second graders who would benefit from additional assistance to improve their reading skills. The Garner Education Foundation SCOR Coordinator recruits and trains community volunteers to read with students on a weekly basis and works with school contacts to assign the volunteers to selected schools. At the end of the year, GEF hosts a luncheon for the volunteers and provides funding for each SCOR student to receive a dictionary.
Marjorie B. Barefoot Education Awards Ceremony – In conjunction with the Town of Garner and the Garner Chamber of Commerce, the Garner Education Foundation hosts a recognition ceremony in April. Teachers of the Year, Teacher Assistants of the Year, National Board Certificated educators, retirees, scholarship recipients, and other awardees are recognized and given a small gift of appreciation.
Scholarships – Each year, the Garner Education Foundation awards scholarships to Garner Magnet High School students. These scholarships are funded as a result of partnerships between GEF and individuals, businesses, and community-based organizations and administered by the Garner Educational Foundation Students may apply via the Garner Education’s online application or the high school website and recipients are selected by GEF. The recipients attend the Marjorie B. Barefoot Education Awards Ceremony, to receive their scholarships. In the spring of 2015, GEF awarded $14,000 in scholarships to Garner Magnet High School students, including two that are funded by the Town of Garner.
Technology Support – The Garner Education Foundation provides monthly technology professional development for all Media Coordinators and school technology staff as well as workshops for teachers, assistance with technology grant writing, and funding for technology purchases. Meetings and workshops have provided training on using digital cameras, website development and maintenance, creating digital video studios and programs, incorporating technology devices in the classroom instruction, and many other topics. Currently, each school that meets set requirements receives a $500 donation for their library or technology program.
STARS ON STAGE – In an effort to showcase the performing arts achievements of the Garner-area GEF schools, GEF in collaboration with the school art department staff members of the eleven schools and Garner Magnet High School, have planned and hosted an evening performance by students. This has been an event well received by the schools and community at large. (Note: It will not be taking place in 2016 due to a facility issue.)
Cooks for Books – Held in late January, GEF’s primary fundraising activity invites local restaurants to participate in Cooks for Books. It is held at a local business, Garner Appliance & Mattress. Tickets are sold for the event and sponsors are solicited to support the event. The theme of the event changes each year with local restaurants featuring their favorite dishes. It is a well-attended event in the community and we usually raise at least $13,000 to support our programs.
Support from the Town of Garner - In addition to our fundraising efforts, each year the Town of Garner includes the Garner Education Foundation in its budget and provides annual monetary support.
This guideline document is to be utilized when the board receives a request for funding on a project. The criteria below support the organization’s Long-Range Plan and mission statement. All funding requests will be reviewed by the board, a vote will occur, and a notification will be sent to the requestor of their approval or non-approval.
